Tim Ferriss's portfolio, the business of taste, and recommendations worth trusting.
Welcome back to the Austin Creator Brief.
This week, we're looking at what happens when people trust your judgment. How Tim Ferriss turned his expertise into a portfolio of books, media, products, and investments. Creators like Tonester and Caleb Ulffers are showing how taste can become a business of its own.
Plus, a simple way to make your recommendations more useful, and upcoming Austin events to get you out of the group chat and into the room.
Taste is becoming a moat
When asked who they trust most for in-depth product reviews, 38% of affluent shoppers chose creators. Just 8% chose celebrities. That's from a Precisify survey of 500 U.S. adults earning at least $150,000 per household with an interest in luxury. Read the survey coverage →
There's a valuable customer who can afford plenty of things but doesn't want to research all of them. They want someone with a good eye to say, "Get this one." Tony Piloseno turned his eye for color into Tonester Paints. Caleb Ulffers makes curation the attraction with "Little Luxuries." The same opportunity exists in coffee, furniture, fragrance, and travel.
AI can compare five espresso machines. But which one would the person whose taste I admire put in their kitchen? As information gets cheaper, trusted judgment may become more valuable. That trust can support recommendations, collaborations, and eventually an owned brand. For creators, taste could become a business asset that follower count barely captures.
Would you rather have 1 million average followers, or 100,000 affluent people who genuinely trust your taste?
Meet Tim Ferriss.

Tim Ferriss built a portfolio, not just an audience
Author · Podcaster · Investor · Austin
Tim Ferriss is a great example of what happens when a creator keeps turning attention into new assets. His empire now includes five #1 bestselling books, a podcast with more than 1 billion downloads, a newsletter with 2 million+ subscribers, physical products, multiple media projects, and an investment portfolio spanning 100+ companies.
The interesting part is how each piece feeds the next. His books built authority. The podcast and newsletter built distribution. That distribution created relationships and access, which helped lead to investments and advisory roles in companies like Uber, Shopify, Meta, Duolingo, SpaceX, Reddit, and xAI.

Publish your rejected picks
Next time you recommend something, share two options you passed on and why. "I looked at five microphones. Here's why I bought this one" gives people more to work with than another "must-have" product.
The sneaky part: you're teaching your audience how you choose. Even when they disagree with the pick, they can learn to trust the process. Try it with tools, restaurants, gear, or venues. Yes, people care about your recommendation, but they also care about how you got to that choice too.
