Arjay's app, Codie's playbook, and a new Austin restaurant from Joshua Weissman.
Welcome back to the Austin Creator Brief.
This week, we're looking at what creators build around their expertise. Arjay McCandless teaches software engineers system design and has built a subscription app for his audience. Codie Sanchez turned a recognizable take on business ownership into a media and education company. And Joshua Weissman is giving people a place to try the food they've been watching him make.
Plus, a creative exercise from Arjay for the next time your ideas start feeling a little too familiar.
What's happened in the creator economy?
Joshua Weissman is opening his first Austin restaurant
TL;DR: Joshua Weissman plans to open Ben & Lynn's on September 12, according to Austin Business Journal. Named after his parents, the Texas-style fried chicken restaurant will feature chicken thighs made with a brine he's spent more than a decade refining. Read the post →
Weissman worked in restaurants before building his online following. Now he's bringing that experience back to a dining room, giving viewers a way to taste his cooking. For creators, it's an interesting extension of the work: a food audience gets a physical place to experience the brand.
Meet Arjay McCandless and Codie Sanchez.

Arjay McCandless
System design · Devmaxx · Software engineering education
Arjay teaches software engineers system design, turning a technical subject into content people want to watch. His two-person skits have become a signature format, but the inspiration came from somewhere unexpected: a political creator. Arjay watches what works in other corners of the internet, then adapts the structure to the problems his audience cares about.
That same audience is the starting point for Devmaxx, his subscription mobile app. Alongside sponsorships, the app gives his business a product of its own: 60% of revenue comes from sponsorships and 40% from products, and his biggest brand deal was $125,000 for four short-form reels.

Codie Sanchez
Contrarian Thinking · Business ownership · Media & education · Austin
Codie made a creator business out of an overlooked subject: buying ordinary businesses. After a career in journalism and finance, she launched Contrarian Thinking in 2020. Her recurring idea is easy to recognize: businesses like laundromats and window-washing companies deserve a closer look.
The Austin-based company sits at No. 10 on Forbes' 2026 Top Creators list, with an estimated $31 million in gross earnings. By our calculation from Forbes' figures, that's $3.10 per follower, the highest ratio among the 50 creators on the list.
Full spotlight →Borrow a format from outside your niche
Arjay's two-person skit format started with an idea he saw in political content. He says the first reel using it brought in more than 30,000 followers. His advice is to keep looking outside your usual feed, even after you've found a format that works.
Try this week: pick a niche you enjoy that has nothing to do with your own. Find one video with a structure you could use: a debate, a character explaining something badly, or a before-and-after reveal. Write down what makes the format work, then build an original version around a question your audience asks you.
Borrow the structure and write your own script, examples, and point of view. Give credit when the inspiration is specific and recognizable. Test one new format alongside the content you already know how to make.
Two this week, plus a September 19 look-ahead.
